Tooth loss isn’t something you want to live with indefinitely, especially when there are multiple options for replacing lost teeth. If implant surgery isn’t appealing, look at what dentures have to offer. Dentures have improved dramatically over the years, making them a great choice for replacement teeth. Dr. Arnold Cutler answers your questions about dentures here to help you decide if they’re right for you. For your convenience, we serve residents in Lakeside and La Mesa, California.
Through full or partial dentures, we can replace as many teeth as you need. Partial dentures fill the gaps left by one or multiple teeth. Full dentures replace all your teeth if they must be removed due to decay, injury, or periodontal disease. Dr. Cutler and our team will create dentures that suit your specific dental needs.
Modern dentures are custom-made to fit the contour of your mouth and jaw for a precise fit. Suction and friction help seal the denture base against your gums to keep them in place. Partial dentures are secured by metal or plastic clasps that attach to adjacent remaining teeth. You can also use denture adhesive to enhance stability. Â
Eating with dentures can be a challenge in the beginning as you’re adjusting to a new set of teeth. First, your new teeth may feel awkward, which can impact how you bite and chew. Once you become accustomed to using your dentures, eating will be easier and more enjoyable. We recommend starting with soft food and gradually introducing more chewy or crispy food. Dentures today are stronger and more solidly built than dentures of the past, allowing you to enjoy a greater variety of food.
That depends a great deal on the quality of your new teeth, their care, and overall use. Generally, however, dentures have a lifespan of 5 – 10 years, after which they’ll need an upgrade.Â
Dentures need to be cleaned regularly to keep them looking their best. They should also be handled with care to avoid chipping or breakage. We recommend removing your dentures for a thorough cleaning, particularly under the gum-colored base where plaque and debris can gather. Gently brush your dentures with a soft-bristle brush and denture cleaner and rinse in warm water. At night, soak your dentures in denture solution to keep them from becoming brittle.  Â
It’s best to remove your dentures at night to give your gums a break. This minimizes your risk of gum swelling and bacterial infection. Soaking your dentures at night also keeps them soft and supple for use the next day.
